About

Ruben Gonzalez

I am a composer, singer and guitarist originally from San Juan, Argentina, where I studied classical guitar and was also part of the Rock Nacional movement in the 80’s. My biggest influence at the time was my father Américo, who was himself a singer and songwriter, and my alter ego Daniel Giovenco, a great composer and performer.

My music mixes South American, classical, rock and jazz/African influences and it has been described as having a “hand made” feeling to it, inviting audiences to participate and make music with me. My compositions reflect my world vision, political observations and popular stories.

In 2012 world-known composer Phillip Glass invited me to perform at the Tune In Festival due to my “musical ingenuity” and as an example of new direction in music.

In New York City I studied improvisation and musicianship in the African American tradition with multi-instrumentalist and composer Makanda Ken McIntyre whom I consider a mentor. I also attended the Jazzmobile Workshops on Jazz, Blues and Afro Caribbean music. I obtained a BFA in Music from City College of New York, an MFA in communication from Hunter College and a Masters degree in music education from Lehman College

My CD’s Foto de mi Aldea and La Libertad feature my songs with a broad scope of musical styles and literary topics. I also wrote and produced “I’m working On Something" a song collection for young people.

I am a Music teacher with a focus on early childhood and percussion orchestra.
